No-claim bonus: the cover you didn’t know you had
A few claim-free years can add lakhs to your cover. Here’s how to see yours.
If you don’t claim in a year, most insurers add to your sum insured at renewal, at no extra cost. It’s called a no-claim or cumulative bonus, and after a few years it can be worth more than you think.
“A cumulative bonus of 20% for each claim-free year shall be added, up to 100% of the Sum Insured.”
Where to see it
Your renewal schedule shows it as cumulative bonus, CB or NCB, next to the base sum insured. Add the two to get your real cover.
What can reduce it
- A claim. Many plans cut the bonus at the same rate it was added.
- A late renewal after the grace period.
- Moving to a lower sum insured.
Some plans now protect the bonus after a claim, or add it faster. Check the bonus clause before you switch.
