Your office health cover ends when your job does
Group cover is useful. It just isn’t yours to keep.
Group health cover through your employer usually starts on day one, often with no waiting periods. That’s why it feels like enough. But it stops the day you leave, and your employer decides what it covers each year.
What to check in your group policy
- The sum insured, and whether it’s shared across your family.
- Whether your parents are included, and on what terms.
- Room rent limits and co-pays. Group plans have them too.
- Maternity cover, if you’re planning a family.
Why you still need your own policy
If you change jobs, take a break or retire, you lose cover when you may need it most. Buying a personal policy later means new waiting periods and a higher premium, especially after 45 or once you’ve developed a condition.
IRDAI rules let you move from group cover to an individual policy with the same insurer, with credit for the time you’ve been covered. Ask HR for the insurer’s details before your last day.
