Day-care treatment: covered without staying the night

Cataract, dialysis and chemotherapy usually don’t need 24 hours in hospital to be claimed.

Most health policies pay only after 24 hours in hospital. Day-care treatment is the exception: procedures that now take a few hours because medicine got faster.

“Day care treatment means a medical treatment or surgical procedure undertaken under general or local anaesthesia in a hospital or day care centre in less than 24 hours.”
In plain words: if your procedure is on the list, it’s covered even if you go home the same day.

What’s usually on the list

  • Cataract surgery
  • Dialysis
  • Chemotherapy and radiotherapy
  • Some ENT and eye procedures
  • Some fracture and dental surgery after an accident

Older policies list a fixed set of procedures, sometimes a few hundred. Many newer plans cover all day-care treatment instead.

What isn’t day care

A consultation, a test, or treatment at a doctor’s clinic (OPD) isn’t day care, even if it’s expensive. Unless your plan has OPD cover, those bills are yours.
